Deltona High School 11th and 12th grade students presented the Galaxy Middle School Library with 30 copies of Rhyme Rhythm Refrain- Poetry of Black History. Books were delivered to the school on May 22. The donation was part of a project to help promote literacy and increase knowledge and pride in the contributions of African-Americans to our great country. A class set of books will also be distributed to Heritage and Deltona Middle Schools.
Rhyme Rhythm Refrain is a collection of 25 poems that tell the stories of the achievements of African-Americans. The poems were written by 21 students in Hazel Sparrow’s Intensive Reading class. Printing of the anthology was funded by a Futures Foundation for Volusia County Schools mini-grant. The 68-page collection of poems is divided into three sections: traditional poems, free verse poems, and acrostic poems. The book also includes a glossary of poetry terms. Poems include military people such as Colin Powell, entertainer Queen Latifah, Dr. Charles Drew, musician Duke Ellington, and business woman Madam C.J. Walker. Rhyme Rhythm Refrain: Poetry of Black History can be purchased at Lulu.com for $6.72. |
